After Reading “Healing Water”…

When I read the novel “Healing Water” the first time, I did not understand what the story was about, but after I watched a video about leprosy on Molokai, then I understood it better. After, I enjoyed reading and easily understood the novel. While reading the novel, I learned about the sad history of Molokai and Father Damien. It was so sad when Pia got leprosy, and he was obliged to leave his family, and I was surprised about Father Damien’s devotion to patients. I thought that Pia was a brave young boy because he was only eight years old, but he had to leave Oahu without his family. If I ever were in Pia’s situation, I could not have left my family and lived by myself. Also, I thought that Maka Nui was lucky to meet Keona. She was younger than Pia, but she also had to live without her family. It was so dangerous to live by herself, and there were always bad people like Albert. When I read the opening, Pia always missed Kamaka, and Kamaka came out only Pia’s memory, so I wondered about why Kamaka did not come out again…? Finally, when Kamaka arrived on Molokai, I yelled out “OMG!!!”, and this scene was my favorite part of the novel. In addition, I was satisfied with the ending of the story because it was a happy ending. Pia forgave Kamaka and he had no more anger inside his mind. If the novel comes out in second episode, I wish for a love story between Pia and Piolani and those two’s children and Kamaka and Malia’s children living on Molokai, so I want to see their happy lives on Molokai. Lastly, I want to recommend the novel to my friends because the novel was not hard to read and it was not boring, it was absoring. I can think about God and leprosy patients, too.

  1. Hi Aileen, you always do the homework first. I also shouted when Kamaka came to Moloka’i too. You are so sweet of the idea at the end of the novel. Do you plan to have some children in the future? :)))

  2. I did the same thing Aileen the first time I read the novel and Kamaka appeared on Moloka’i. I couldn’t believe it!!! I would love to read a second novel where Pia and Piolani have kids and also Kamaka and Malia have a family, and we as the reader get to see how they live out the rest of their lives. I think it might be sad though too. At some point, Pia and Malia will die, and Kamaka too if he ends up getting leprosy…
